About the Annual DK5K

Founded in 2017, the Dylan Konakowitz Memorial Foundation is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit charitable organization established to preserve the memory of Dylan Konakowitz by helping others.  Our goal is not only to offer scholarships to the New London County community that knew and loved Dylan, but also to educate the public and raise awareness of the seriousness of type 1 diabetes (T1D).

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease that occurs when a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin, the hormone that controls blood-sugar levels. T1D develops when the insulin-producing pancreatic beta cells are mistakenly destroyed by the body’s immune system. The cause of this attack is still being researched, however scientists believe the cause may have genetic and environmental components.

Both the 1st and 2nd Annual Dylan Konakowitz Memorial Foundation 5K Walk/Runs were an amazing success. In May 2020, we held the Third Annual Dylan Konakowitz Memorial Foundation 5K, but this year the event was VIRTUAL. A new way of life for most of us; however we were very lucky to have so many participants (near and far) and gratefully exceeded our fundraising goal. Between fundraising, registration, and donations, we raised almost $10,000. All of the proceeds from these events are used to fund scholarships as well as future endeavors to raise awareness of Type 1 Diabetes including community support. None of this would be possible without the generous support of our sponsors, donors, volunteers, and committee. Thank you for lending your hand and your support!
